In fact, human beings have loved meat for more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/why-humans-eat-meat\" target=\"_blank\"><u>2.5 million<\/u><\/a>\u00a0years. Who can blame us for liking meat? After all, it\u2019s an excellent source of vitamins, proteins, and minerals, and it tastes great.<\/p>\n<p>But how much meat do we eat daily? Which types of meat are we consuming most? Is meat consumption increasing or decreasing? How has Covid-19 impacted meat consumption? We spent some time looking for answers to these questions and more.<\/p>\n<p>While we have tried to get the latest available statistics, you will notice that some of the data is not updated yearly. href=\"https:\/\/www.meatinstitute.org\/index.php?ht=d\/sp\/i\/47465\/pid\/47465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>amount<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of meat processed by the meat and poultry industry in the United States in 2017. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meatinstitute.org\/index.php?ht=d\/sp\/i\/47465\/pid\/47465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>numbers<\/u><\/a>\u00a0are from the North American Meat Institute:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9 billion chickens<\/li>\n<li>2 million cattle and calves<\/li>\n<li>7 million turkeys<\/li>\n<li>2 million sheep and lambs<\/li>\n<li>121 million hogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Estimates indicate that the average American men\u2019s daily meat consumption is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meatinstitute.org\/index.php?ht=d\/sp\/i\/47465\/pid\/47465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>136g<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(4.8 oz.). In comparison, that of women is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meatinstitute.org\/index.php?ht=d\/sp\/i\/47465\/pid\/47465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>89 g<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(3.13 oz.).<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/vegetariancalculator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Vegetarian Calculator<\/u><\/a>\u00a0at Usatoday.com shows that an average human being will consume <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation-now\/2015\/03\/11\/meat-eaters-animals-lifetime\/70136010\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>7,000<\/u><\/a>\u00a0animals over a lifetime. However, the same organization warns, \u201cif you currently eat more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/meat-nutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>90 g<\/u><\/a>\u00a0[3.2 oz.] (cooked weight) of red or processed meat a day, the Department of Health and Social Care advises that you cut down to 70 g [2.5 oz.].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Cancer Research Fund also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcrf.org\/dietandcancer\/limit-red-and-processed-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>recognizes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that red meat is an excellent source of protein, iron, and other micronutrients. But is it true that Americans eat more meat than people from other countries?<\/p>\n<p>According to 2016 figures available from the World Economic Forum, Americans indeed eat more meat than everyone else.
