How ChefsTemp S1 Setup Selection Works

The Finder separates product compatibility from installation guidance, and evaluates ProTemp S1 and Breezo V2 independently. A model-specific Catalog or Exact Setup result is the authoritative model result and may still say Confirm when evidence is incomplete. The principles below are General Selection Guidance and are not a compatibility promise for an unlisted grill.

Check S1 compatibility

ChefsTemp first determines whether the cooker can safely and appropriately use ProTemp S1. The model result is shown as Yes, No, or Confirm before a stem version is selected.

Measure the thermometer port

Measure the existing thermometer or gauge port before choosing an S1 version. A port approximately 7.8 mm (0.3 in) or larger normally uses the Universal-diameter family. For a smaller port, compare the opening with the 4.1 mm (0.16 in) BGE stem and use model-specific guidance when available.

Choose the stem length

After stem diameter is established, choose stem length from the cooker geometry: shorter when internal clearance is limited, standard length for typical installations, and longer when the mounting point is farther from the food or target measurement area.

Evaluate Breezo separately

Breezo adds automatic pit-temperature control by regulating combustion airflow. S1 monitoring and Breezo airflow control are separate compatibility decisions. A grill or smoker is a Breezo candidate when cooking temperature can be influenced through a controllable combustion-air intake and ChefsTemp has a suitable, safe mounting path for that intake.

ProTemp S1 version guide

Port diameter establishes the stem family; cooker geometry then determines the useful stem length. The exact model result overrides this guide whenever ChefsTemp has verified the model.

Installation guardrail: Replacing an existing gauge or using an existing port is preferred when verified. Drilling may be used on appropriate metal cookers when model-specific guidance calls for it. Do not drill ceramic based on general guidance.

When Breezo automatic temperature control is a candidate

A grill or smoker is a Breezo candidate when cooking temperature can be influenced through a controllable combustion-air intake and ChefsTemp has a suitable, safe mounting path for that intake.

  • Included Kamado-style mounting plate when the intake geometry is supported
  • Direct fit through a suitable existing vent opening
  • Existing round vent hole with unused openings sealed as instructed
  • Model-appropriate Breezo mounting adapter or plate
  • A 1.25-inch mounting hole in an appropriate metal structure when model-specific guidance explicitly calls for drilling
  • A fitted metal plate with a 1.25-inch Breezo mounting hole for some large offset-smoker applications

Compatibility guardrail: Do not infer Breezo support only from grill category. A model-specific Yes, No, or Confirm result and its installation guidance take priority over these general mounting principles.

Exact model recommendation takes priority

Selection order is: Exact Setup → verified Catalog model → general selection guidance. General rules help explain the decision, but they do not override model-specific compatibility, installation, drilling, adapter, or Breezo instructions.

An unlisted grill is not automatically treated as compatible. ChefsTemp should verify the S1 version and Breezo mounting method instead of guessing.

Common ProTemp S1 Setup Questions

Can I search by a grill nickname or abbreviation?

Yes. The Finder can match canonical model names plus verified aliases, abbreviations, nicknames, and common naming variants.

Which ProTemp S1 version should I choose?

Measure the existing thermometer or gauge port before choosing an S1 version. A port approximately 7.8 mm (0.3 in) or larger normally uses the Universal-diameter family. For a smaller port, compare the opening with the 4.1 mm (0.16 in) BGE stem and use model-specific guidance when available. After stem diameter is established, choose stem length from the cooker geometry: shorter when internal clearance is limited, standard length for typical installations, and longer when the mounting point is farther from the food or target measurement area. If the Finder has a verified result for your exact model, follow that model-specific recommendation instead of the general rule.

Do I need Breezo for my grill?

Not for temperature monitoring alone. Breezo adds automatic pit-temperature control by regulating combustion airflow. S1 monitoring and Breezo airflow control are separate compatibility decisions. A grill or smoker is a Breezo candidate when cooking temperature can be influenced through a controllable combustion-air intake and ChefsTemp has a suitable, safe mounting path for that intake. Follow the exact model result when one is available.

Can Breezo work with an offset smoker?

Some offset smokers can use Breezo, but offset construction alone does not establish compatibility. ChefsTemp may specify an existing vent, an adapter, or for some large offset applications a fitted metal plate with a 1.25-inch mounting hole. Use the exact model result or ask ChefsTemp to verify the intake and mounting geometry.

Does ProTemp S1 require drilling?

Not when a verified installation can replace the existing analog gauge or use a suitable thermometer port. Some metal cookers may use a drilled mounting hole when model-specific guidance calls for it. Do not drill ceramic based on general guidance.

What if my grill model is not listed?

An unlisted grill is not automatically treated as compatible. ChefsTemp should verify the S1 version and Breezo mounting method instead of guessing. Send the brand, model, photos of the gauge mounting area and air intake, and the thermometer-port diameter when possible.
